Decisions, decisions, decisions...

There are three treatment options available for an acoustic neuroma ("AN").  They are, in no particular order:
  1. Observation ("Wait and watch")
  2. Radiosurgery (radiation treatment)
  3. Microsurgical removal
Observation - "Wait and watch" is the perfect description.  The tumor is monitored by regularly scheduled MRIs.

Radiosurgery -"Stereotactic Radition Therapy".  A non-invasive treatment where radiation is used to prevent further growth of the tumor.  Gamma Knife and CyberKnife are the two most common systems used for treatment of an AN.

Microsurgical removal - Tumor removal via surgery.  There are three surgical approaches available.  The approach used is dependent upon the tumor location, size and symptoms.

For those interested in learning more, I discovered a Univ. of Minn. website that provides a detailed description of these options.  Click here

The small-to-medium size of my tumor allows me to pursue any of the above options.  I initially thought it would be much easier to be limited to a single option, to take the decision out of my hands.  But when I read the stories of patients who are limited to only a single plan of action (due to tumor size and/or symptoms) I'm grateful to have this window of opportunity.

I'm not going to go into greater detail about each option, but simply stated each one provides its own unique pros and cons.  If you do any research, be prepared, there are some real strong opinions presented.  But what it comes down to, in my situation, is a personal choice.

  1. Den,good morning. Sounds like you have a big decision to make and you are right, after looking around it is good that you have options. I guess one of my questions would be "How close is the facial nerve to your tumor" or is that something they can't tell until they operate? Last time we talked you were leaning towards the surgery, are you still favoring that option and when do you meet with the surgeon?
Well enough questions, call if you want to chat.
